The background to these forecasts is inflation well within the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s target range of 1% to 3%, and unemployment at a 4.5-year high of 5.1%. This is giving the Bank scope to continue the interest rate cuts it began in August last year to help bolster an economy that only just avoided falling into recession in the fourth quarter.
